Welcome aboard the MBTA, or the T as called by locals

The T consists of three heavy rail lines and two light rail lines.

  1. Red Line
  2. Mattapan Line (Classified as part of the Red Line)
  3. Orange Line
  4. Green Line
  5. Blue Line

The T also operates buses, commuter rail and ferries, though we will not explore those in this website.

Things to know

What is Inbound/Outbound?

There are four stations named Government Center, Park Street, State and Downtown Crossing (first iframe). Trains heading towards those are classified "Inbound Trains" and trains heading from them are classified "Outbound Trains"

Is the T accessible?

Most stations and trains are accessible on the T. Green Line Type 7 and Mattapan Line PCC trolleys are not accessible, though most Mattapan Line stops are equipped with a wheelchair lift to access the train. Many aboveground stops on the Green Line are also non-accessible, though the D branch is planned to become fully accessible in upcoming years. All heavy rail stations are accessible except for Bowdoin on the Blue Line. Consider Government Center, a 5 minute or less walk away

What is a "Branch"?

A branch is the equivelent to different routing. Both the Red and Green Lines utilize branches. The Red Line "A" Branch goes from Alewife, Cambridge to Ashmont, Dorcester and the "B" Branch goes from Alewife again to Braintree, splitting off from the A branch at JFK/UMass (second iframe). The Green Line has 4 branches, the "B", "C", "D", and "E" Branches. The E branch leaves the mainline at Copley (third iFrame), while the B, C and D branches split at Kenmore (fourth iFrame)
